Colchicine and Atenolol interaction? Are there any serious drug interactions between Colchicine and Atenolol? Meaning is it safe to take both? Those answering should be credentialed to give such answers, meaning your are a doctor, nurse, pharmacist, etc. Thank you!
For reference: Colchicine is to treat gout, while Atenolol treats hypertension.
adam d replied: "there are none that i'm aware of and none that came up on micromedex (what pharmacists use to check).
i'm sure you already know, but careful with the grapefruit juice will on colchicine, it interacts with the hepatic metabolism"
atenolol and metforim interaction? My adrenal gland is hyperactive (Diagnosed at 15 yrs old) The only med that controls my BP is Atenolol a beta blocker. Ive been on it 4 yrs, and now I am on Metforim for PCOS...When I take these two meds together I feel terrible. I am tired all the time and weak. Ive talked to my dr. about this and he doesnt seem concerned. I was wondering if anyone knew if these two meds SHOULDNT be taken together? I saw a few sites that said they shouldnt but they dont give the reason why. Thanks for any info.
Destiny replied: "There aren't really contradictions. You might want to take them at different times. Try taking your Metformin each night, not in the morning....and your BP meds at the start of the day. Sometimes taking multiple medications at the same time can make you feel ill...it could be a little much for your system all at once."
Atenolol 50mg/day and albuterol inhaler interactions? Hi everyone, I am currently on Atenolol 50mg/day for tachycardia and I also use an albuterol inhaler. I read online that it isn't recommended that I use both together? Why? Please explain if you know. Thank you!
greydoc6 replied: "Atenolol is a beta blocker. Beta blockers, also known as beta-adrenergic blocking agents, are drugs that block norepinephrine and epinephrine (adrenaline) from binding to beta receptors on nerves. There are three types of beta receptors and they control several functions based on their location in the body. They are primarily used to slow down the heart rate and to lower blood pressure by dilating the blood vessels.
Albuterol is a beta 2 receptor agonist to relieve bronchospasm.
The two drugs work at cross purposes and atenolol reduces the efficacy of albuterol."
Re Hubby's Hi BP, low pulse, atenolol Question; If take water pill, contraindicated w/ cozar due to potassium? Thanks for the info regarding this issue (Husband has lo pulse genetically and is on atenolol which makes him out of breath and lower pulse, e.g. 40)
My husband has taken acetazolamide (which I requested from doc) due to a small study that found it helped some with severe sleep apnea. But after the 2 stents were placed in Dec. 06, doc gave him cozaar, which is contraindicated w/ postassium, but when take acetazolamide, need to take potassium supplement. I understand that blood tests could monitor this interaction; and the acet. does help with the sleep apnea (a bit, he has complex apnea and is getting the new vpap machine in about a month). Cardiologist is on vacation now, I have called twice about this question and tried to ask him last visit, but he only has about 15 minutes per patient (he spent more like 45 minutes w/us), yet I still didn't get through my list of questions.
BigJRules replied: "I am sorry that you are having trouble getting your questions answered, however, getting serious medical advise from people you don't know is dangerous, so please only use advice from websites as suggestions, and use them, in conjunction with information from your healthcare provider to make decisions.
That being said, Cozaar (lorsartan potassium) contains potassium. When you describe "Water Pill" that is very broad. You must be careful which diuretic (Water Pill) you use because some are Potassium Sparing (don't cause excess urination of Potassium) and some are Potassium wasting (Cause excess urination of Potassium.)
Which diuretic your husband should take is based on his kidney function and is to be determined by his CARDIOLOGIST, please never start or stop a medication on your own, unless there are really severe problems. Anyway, he should most likely be on a potassium wasting diuretic like HCTZ(hydrochlorthiazide) or Lasix (furosemide).
About the Atenolol(propranolol), if he is fatigued, short of breath and bradycardic (low heart rate) with the Atenolol, to the point that he can't function for 30minutes to an hour, the Cardiologist may want to think about decreasing the dose of the Atenolol, or to try using another beta blocker. DO NOT DO THIS YOURSELF, PLEASE. The Cozaar is and ACE inhibitor, which is another type of medication that helps to lower his blood pressure, and maybe this combo may be too much for your husband, if one or the other was just recently added.
If you can't get ahold of your cardiologist, please call someone else in his practice, you need your questions answered.
Hope you get your help, and good luck to you!"

Has anyone had a negative interaction w/ Adderall & antacids and herbal/vitamin products?? Please Advise!? I accidentally, without thinking, took an antacid this afternoon about an hour after taking my afternoon dose of 15 mg short acting Adderall. Then my heart started to race. I couldn't figure out why it would come on all of a sudden like that. I went online to check the side effects/interactions and read that antacids can cause serious side effects. Then I decided to take a beta blocker (atenolol) to slow my heart down. I checked effects/interactions again and learned that beta blockers can cause severe side effects. What to do? I remembered I had some herbal products for the heart so I took them thinking because they are natural they won't harm me. I took Hawthorn for heart support and Collius Forskolii for blood pressure regulaton. I couldn't belive I could be so dense. Both of those supplements are nothing less than medicine in herbal form. So now I'm thinking....I'm gonna die. That made my heart pound faster. It's been about 1 hour since my "episode" and I am still alive.Any advice?
Amy J replied: "Relax. Do not take anything else and call the Emergency room or your physician. If you cannot get an answer from them, then call Poison Control. If you do not feel well in any way,CALL 911,to take you to the Emergency room to be checked out and monitored. I'd rather be safe than sorry. Hope you feel better!
Amy J."
Brad replied: "I take adderall and i also have acid reflux so i constantly take antacids during the day even right after taking my adderall. Your hear started to race because you panicked when you took the antacid. Trust me your just over-reacting. You probably shouldn't have started loading yourself with meds the second you started freaking out though lol. It won't hurt you to take an antacid with adderall or herbal/vitamin products you just had a panic attack is all."
Can Somebody Please Help Me Find Out If These Medications Are Safe To Take Together? I Am currently on 100mg of Atenolol (Beta blocker), & Also 10mg of Lexapro (SSRI) daily.
Now I Was Prescribed Percocet 10mg for my back and neck injurys.
I need to know if there are any interactions with taking these three medications together. Im just getting A second opinion to make sure I am safe. Thank You so much :)
Ok, ill wait untill tomorrow when my pharmacy opens to ask them about taking the third medication. My doctor said It was fine, but I Just wanted to double check again. Thanks everyone :)
love replied: "What you should do is call your local pharmacy and ask a pharmacist. Or call 2 of them just to make sure."
savigrl replied: "i wouldn't trust the answers on here...they arent always right. you can look up "drug interactions" on google and they have websites where you can click all the ones you are one and they will show you any possible side effects."
dream492003 replied: "Please get into the habbit of asking your pharmacist when you get the drugs. It will not cost you extra."
fuzzykittyct replied: "Ask you pharmacist they can look them up and tell you, If you got them at the same pharmacy they should have already,"
yankee replied: "The best way to find out is to call your pharmacist and ask. I wouldn't take a chance taking advice from total strangers."
gimpalomg replied: "Your pharmacist or pharmacists (call 2) are the best source for this information. The have literature specifically aimed at drug interaction. They are really a better source than your Doctor and certainly better than you would find on here unless a pharmacist chooses to chime in.
If you are set on doing this yourself, I did a Yahoo search on "Drug interactions". The first place on the list follows."
Dr. Junior replied: "As far as the medications alone, no combination will produce an interaction causing a negative reaction. When adding food and alcohol to the mix, only Percocet interacts with alcohol. Both alcohol (ethanol) and acetaminophen can cause damage to the liver. The risk of experiencing liver damage may be increased when alcohol and acetaminophen are used together. This potential interaction is more likely to occur when alcohol is combined with high doses of acetaminophen, or when alcohol and acetaminophen are both used daily over a long period of time. People who consume three or more alcoholic drinks per day should avoid using high doses of acetaminophen or avoid using acetaminophen on a regular basis. Discuss this potential interaction with your healthcare provider at your next appointment, or sooner if you think you are having problems. This interaction is poorly documented and is considered moderate in severity."
Will tooth extraction which needs anesthesia create a problem for me because I am taking aspirin? It's me again, the same guy who just posted questions about drug interaction between blood lowerng medicines and amoxycillin, and who also posted question about the condition of my tooth (upper molar). Here's some additional information about my 3rd post today. I am currently taking atenolol 100mg and losartan 50mg to lower my blood pressure, and at the same time I am also taking a low dose aspirin 75mg daily. Because of the possibility that I might need my upper molar to be extracted if the antibiotics don't work, I am worried about bleeding or any other drug interactions. I started taking low dose aspirin and atenolol in June 2007, but because my blood pressure remained high, my doctor added losartan 50mg in August 2007. Thank you very much.
curlylips replied: "Good question. Aspirin is a blood thinner. You may want to stop at least 48 hours before and after extraction to prevent excessive bleeding. Same goes with vitamin E and garlic supplements.
You may want to ask your doctor and dentist about your other meds.
royphil3,
Advil is ibuprofen, totally different from aspirin."
royphil345 replied: "Aspirin is fine. I always take some before going to the dentist. They'll even tell you to exceed the recommended dose of Advil if you have to wait a day for an emergency appointment. I don't know anything about the other drugs you're taking. I would just call your doctor or the dentist's office and ask."
Barbra replied: "Aspirin just thins the blood; making it easier to bleed more. Also, depends on how many aspirins you take."
LaLa replied: "If you are taking Aspirin or any other blood thinners (and yes, garlic thins the blood too), at the very least, stop taking them the day before your surgery including the day of your surgery. But talk to your doctor first to make sure this is ok for your situation. If you continue to take them, you run a high risk of bleeding too much, which will also affect the healing because you won't be able to clot properly.
Ignore the answer about Advil. Those are two completely different medications."
domenic x replied: "I am quite familiar with atenolol because I suffer from flactuating blood pressure level. My doctor stopped me from taking them anymore because their side effect and I am now on other pills for blood pressure. Once you start taking pills to control the blood pressure you will have to continue taking them because it could go up without noticing and so to defend against other worse things like stroke it is better to continue having pills for blood pressure.
The thing that you have to check and inform your dentist is about taking the aspirin. The function of these are to make the blood thinner so as to avoid other worse things that could happen because of high blod pressure. Now when you come to get a tooth extracted you could bleed and because of the aspirin the bleeding could take longer. So first thing to do when you go to the dentist and also for other things it is always good to inform about what drugs you are taking. In dentistry because of the blood it is important so that he could be alert of what could happen. There is nothing special or that you can't do because you take aspirin. Otherwise all those who take these pills won't be able to have any teeth taken out. The most inportant thing is to inform the dentist about them most specially and also about all the other pills that you take. Myself I also take a considerable amount of pills and always inform him of what medicine I take.
This way you can put your mind to rest. Don't worry about it, he sure knows what to do.
Good luck and take care."
frogger replied: "i work in an oral surgery office and most times the doctors here ask patients to stop taking asprin 5 days prior to having any surgery. each patient, however, is different and the most important thing is to check with the doctor/nurses in the office that you're going to, sometimes its ok to stay on asprin but its safest to double check :)"
CDA~NY replied: "We ask patients to discontinue taking aspirin 3 days prior to the extraction date... then it's resumed the next day after."
Pangolin replied: "Aspirin permanently disables platelet function. Platelet turnover time is 7 days.
For surgery, we usually have patients off aspirin for 5-7 days, so that they regain most of their clotting function. I don't know what dentists do, but you need to follow whatever directions your dentist gives you.
If you are having the tooth pulled with local anesthesia, then your blood pressure medications shouldn't affect anything. If you are having sedation or general anesthesia, you should continue your medications, including taking your moning medications on the day of surgery.
People with high blood pressure tend to have wider fluctuations in blood pressure during anesthesia. Having good control of your BP prior to having anesthesia, and staying well hydrated, help mitigate that response.
It is especially important not to stop your atenolol, because you will get rebound hypertension, which can be dangerous.
Good luck with the tooth."
17 days sober but then...? Hi everyone
I haven't posted here in awhile but here I am once again . I went 17-18 days sober and was feeling pretty good but them I came down with prostatitis which is a miserable condition that takes months to get rid of and the treatment options are few and far between (and have TONS of side effects). I get prostatitis about once a year and was given 500mg of Cipro to take twice daily for a month.
About a week into taking the Cipro, the side effects (terrible aches and pains in my joints, muscles, bones, etc) were just too much to bare and since there is no known interaction between alcohol and Cipro, I decided to have a few gin and sodas to put myself out of the misery I was in.
BIG MISTAKE!.
Now, I'm back to drinking again every other day and last night I got as drunk as a skunk on Gin and soda and this morning, the hangover was soooo bad that I thought I was having a heart attack or pulmonary embolism. I got really dizzy, short of breath and my pulse went up to 105 beats per minute. My BP was 175/95 too. I quickly took an Atenolol and an aspirin and after awhile, my BP and pulse were back to normal again but I still wasn't feeling all that good. I have been told by nurses that lots of people end up in the ER with these same symptoms after a night of hard drinking so I guess this is normal?.
Anyway, my bones/muscles/joints still ache, my stomach burns like crazy from the alcohol and Cipro and I have had diarrhea for about a week. I'm a wreck right now but I definately plan to begin taking the Naltrexone and detoxing again because these hangovers are the WORST!!.
Well, thanks for listening and wish me luck. I could sure use a friend or two right now!.
- Regards, NFIS
Insane replied: "Keep trying!
stick with it a set back is just a set back, you can do it!"
Jim W replied: "Who said that Recovery was easy . . I'll be your non-drinking buddy if you like. My name is Jim & I havent's taken a drink for 10+ yrs. Hey, the one who has the most sobriety is the one who got up first this morning. It doesn't matter how much time one has accumilated.
Remember ONE thing. You ONLY have to NOT drink for today. Don't worry about yesterday or tomorrow . .Hang in there guy . . .(e)"
spiffyjones86 replied: "This is just a friendly suggestion from a stranger:
When your symptoms from the prostatis get so bad that you want to take a drink, perhaps going to an AA meeting would help. On top of that, having other people who are "counting days" with you, and something to take your mind off of both drinking and of the pain your in could be a really positive thing for you.
Feel better, and keep doing the work. Best Wishes."
puppy luv replied: "dont drink"
carly replied: "You had a relapse and that is very normal. This is where AA is so great. There is always someone there to call who has been exactly through what you are going through. Good luck in your sobriety. And you have a friend and supporter right here in me !!!"
Alan H replied: "You are on the right track. I am 17+ years sober myself and will be glad to hear from you.
AA can provide a lot uf support. It helped me more than you can know!"
k g replied: "Good Luck NFIS, Its always tough to beat the bottle especially when you are going through tough times. I wish you luck and may you beat both illnesses.
KG"
Ricoba replied: "Relapse is a major fact of recovery.
Don't panic get back on the wagon, get to a meeting and get the help you need to stay sober.
Just don't keep making excuses, keep on keeping on."
Is blood in the semen a serious matter? Today, I noticed blood in my semen. It is bright red and looks like very fresh. I am taking medications for high blood pressure, Atenolol 100mg and Losartan 50mg, and at the same time taking a low dose aspirin 75mg daily. About a week ago, I have an absecced tooth (upper molar), and because of this I started taking Amoxycillen 500mg three times a day starting only yesterday. Did any of my conditions contributed to what had just happened to me? My blood pressure, my absecced tooth, my daily therapy of low dose aspirin, drug interaction of my blood lowering medicines and antibiotics, etc., etc. This is the first time that happened to me and I am really very scared. Please help. Thanks
I don't feel anything abnormal in the lower part of my body. I don't have any fever. There is no blood in my urine. There is no problem when I urinate. The only problem is the blood in my semen.
Dr. L replied: "read about it..if continues see doc...."
rustoria617 replied: "Not usually too serious. If associated with pain when you c*m, probably a prostate infection. The amoxycillin should take care of that.
Wait a few days. If this continues, see your doc."
