How long do the side effects of Wellbutrin last? I have been taking 75mg of Wellbutrin for a week. I am already feeling some positive effects but today I have been trembling quite a bit. Trembling is not on the side effects sheet my pharmacist gave me. Is this a common side effect? How long on average do the side effects last?

Erryn B replied: "Don't be afraid to go back to the pharmacist or call to get a consult. Just because a side effect isn't listed, does not mean it can't happen. Length of time of side effects varies from person to person. I was nauseous on Wellbutrin and it lasted about a week. Another drug we tried gave me numb and tingling hands and feet and a month later there was still tingling - I went off the med. Also, don't be afraid to talk to your doctor. It may be that the dosage needs to be adjusted. If that doesn't work, there are lots of other meds out there. Finally, make sure you rule out other causes. Caffeine, dietary changes and stress could all cause trembling. A dairy (including foods and meds and any side effects) can help you and your doctor trace the source of the problem. I always throw in a suggestion of nontrarditional remedies. Meditation (there are lots of CDs you can buy to help) is great for so many issues and can help you feel more in control. It probably won't eliminate the side effect, but it will can give you greater inner peace. Seek out help. Your doctor and pharmacist are your best allies. Good luck!"

Criterias replied: "I take 100mg twice daily, I've been taking successfully it for almost a year now. I have personally experienced trembling/the shakes. I asked my doc about this right away, and she has assured me that it is a side effect that should light off - & go away. Sometimes I do still feel shaky - but it's been the only thing that's helped me thus far and I feel that feeling better on daily basis out weighs the shakes/trembling. I also take xanax daily - that could make me more relaxed and subside the full effect of the trembling that most people experience. Hang in there, the first couple weeks can be VERY tough. I almost stopped taking it 4 or 5 times within the first 3 weeks of taking it, I had to be told over and over that it takes time to work/kick in. If I were to switch from Lexapro to Wellbutrin, would that minimize the sexual side effects? Don't worry, I'm going to ask my doctor this as well but I'd rather hear it from people who have experienced it. Lexapro leaves me literally NO sex drive~ hubby says it's evil :) I also think it's made me gain weight. Or maybe I've gained weight b/c I'm old and lazy :) Have any of you experienced any side effects with Wellbutrin? If so, were any of them sexual? Also, is there a generic form of Wellbutrin? My Lexapro costs $40 a month with my prescprition card b/c there isn't a generic form. Thanks!

Jo replied: "I am on wellbutrin and I will say for me it has increased my sex drive, lessened my smoking habit and over all makes me a happier person. You have to have your Dr though decide which is best for you. If you do switch, you will go through side effects such as the dirraeha and stomache problems for the first few weeks, but overall it is a good choice. Good luck."

Chuck M replied: "According to my Dr. , Wellbutrin does not have sexual side-effects. I have been on it for two years, with no adverse reactions. Welbutrin IS available in generic, under the name "bupropion". I cannot tell that it caused weight gain for me."

k m replied: "Yes there is a generic for Wellbutrin- it's Bupropion; the sustained XL release has no generic. They are both selective serotonon reuptake inhibitors, meaning that they prevent serotonin ( a mood-controlling hormonal neurotransmitter) from being stored in neurons, so it floats around longer making you feel better. Decreased libido and insomnia are frequent side effects of both, so it may not be a huge improvement. However, people react so individually to most psych drugs that no one can really say until you try it. Since it takes 4-6 weeks for any of these drugs to become effective, you definitely need the doc's guidance in switching over. There is a risk of serotonin syndrome if not done correctly. If you are in your forties, have you considered decreased libido to be a function of pre-menopausal state? Many women my age complain to me of this- and it's hormone-related. It's supposed to also help with smoking, and be minimal weight gain. There is a generic form of Wellbutrin. I've had both. Prefer the original. Switch over, both you and hubby will be happier ! Stay away from the Prozac tho, I took that for a short time years ago and it did have sexual side effects."

How do i know if wellbutrin side effects will go away? i was recently switched from 50 mg of zoloft to 100 mg of wellbutrin. i started off feeling really sleepy all day and for the past week ive had a bad tension headache everyday. i also feel kind of sick to my stomach and easily irritated. i cant get ahold of my doctor so i dont know what i should do. help!

I think the irritability may just be the way you are feeling from the shift in the meds though I don't know the time frame of the switch. Call your MD 1st thing Monday AM & tell him/her that it's an emergency. Tell MD all your symptoms. I'm assuming you're taking Wellbutrin XL which has less side effects. Is anyone else having the same side effects to Wellbutrin SR? I take Wellbutrin SR 150mg twice daily for over 6 months, I have been having some interesting side affects since, first of all my short term memory and my memory all together have been pretty much non-existent, my concentration is lower then it has ever been and I am always tired and my reflexes are shot. Is anyone else having these problems? And if so how did you solve them?

I also forgot that I took it, and ended up double dosing, and got painful, itchy hives ( bumps) all over my body. Everywhere. Consult your doctor about these side effects, he/she may be able to change your prescription or dosage."

Goldenrain replied: "I tried it for a short time to see if it was acceptable and it made me too tired and kept me awake at night so I got off it. So I didn't have the problems as extensive as yours. I ended up using antidepressants for about two and a half years and went off the one I was on about 3 months ago and noticed I felt again. I see how the antidepressant dulled my life inside, I am happy to be off them. If your symptoms are unacceptable and they are causing more problems than you are getting help from a medication you should try to switch to a different medication that you can live with. That is how I solve my problem with a medication that is causing unacceptable side affects and I talk to my doctor about it to figure out an alternative."

Any sexual side effects from taking Wellbutrin? I've had bad sexual side effects from taking SSRI's and Cymbalta and am now considering Wellbutrin for my depression/ anxiety / bi-polar. With those other drugs it's almost like the nerves are deadened and my urges are almost gone, and this does nothing for the depression.

Heather S replied: "I have been on Wellbutrin for over a year with none of those side effects, also when you start taking it you don't have to go through a week of hell while your body is getting used to it. ie: sweats, dizziness, insomnia etc. I have been on so many different ssri's and I can't stand that feeling like you just don't care anymore and everything is blah. But, on the downside Wellbutrin hasn't been quite as effective for me, but enough so that I wouldn't go on another ssri."

Has anyone experienced Paxil Withdrawal or Wellbutrin side effects? I started taking Wellbutrin Sr a few days ago. I was on Paxil Cr and switched meds because of the weight gain of Paxil. I stopped taking Paxil Cr cold turkey. And now I feel horrible. My body is shaking within, memory loss for a second or two, slurred words, dizziness, imbalance, fever, tipical flu like symptoms. I know that these are symptoms of withdrawal, but I just wanted to know if anyone has gone through this and how long did it last. I'm going on vacation soon and I don't want to be miserable. I did go to the doctor. I was on paxil about a year and a half ago, stopped cold turkey and no side effects. So he said if I did it then, then it probly would be ok to stop. I just can't tell if it's side effects of Wellbutrin or withdrawal, or both combined. I am going back to the doctors today. Hopefully he'll tell me something good.

Surreal replied: "YOu need to see your doctor...in fact, you may need to seek the advice of a new one because no doctor in their right mind would suggest that you do such a thing as quit cold turkey. You have to ween yourself off of one decreasing dose of paxil while beginning at a low dose of wellbutrin. Then keep going decreasing one and increasing another to the point where you are only taking wellbutrin after a few weeks. Go to a doctor. This is not good and could be worse for your health. good luck."

dave s replied: "I'm not a doc but I went thru similar symptoms. Mine was attributed to drop in BP. Went to ER as I felt faint. Never drop an anti-depressant cold turkey as it can really mess up your body chemistry. See your physician NOW."

Jess replied: "If I were you, I would be very clear with the doctor and let him know you need to be weaned off. Cold turkey off antidepressants is not a good idea...it can be most unpleasant. But if you cut down gradually, you should be able to avoid those side effects. I have found that going down slowly to the smallest dose possible and then taking that tiny dose every other day before stopping altogether works very well for me. I've been dealing with bipolar since I was a child and I'm very familiar with and well informed regarding medications. Your doctor isn't the boss...he (or she) should be your partner in your treatment. you have every right to stand up for yourself and make sure you are getting what you need. There is no need to suffer with those withdrawal symptoms when it is so easily avoidable by weaning slowly. It's not too late...you can still do this. I don't know about Paxil specifically, but I have taken Wellbutrin with Zoloft...with Celexa...and with Lexapro...so I know that it is possible to take both at the same time (and for me it was quite effective actually), but that is something to talk with the dr about because you may have circumstances that would make it a bit more risky (certain other health problems or medications)."

Can anyone tell me what the side effects are for taking wellbutrin XL and Prozac together? just went to see the shrink today and he's putting me on wellbutrin first, then in a month may give me prozac. i just wanted to know what could potentially happen for side effects. i am currently on 300 mg wellbutrin XL a day.
